2021 Wildlife Window Nature Series: A Naturalist’s To-Do List with Kevin Cook
Join Kevin Cook via Zoom for a presentation on one nature-related or wildlife-specific problem each month. In conclusion, he will present a proposal for solving that problem.
January 6, 10-11am
- “Here’s My Card, My Wildlife Card”
- In 1921 the Colorado General Assembly required state wildlife management to be funded by hunting license revenue. Surveys now indicate more people watch wildlife than hunt it. A century later, we need a new way to pay the bills; a “Wildlife Card” could help enormously.

- “And the Winner is . . .!”
- Science Fair and Science Olympiad are two fabulous competitions for students interested in science. Both, however, involve more physical than biological science. A statewide biology competition focusing on wildlife in Colorado would make a huge difference in the future of wildlife management and conservation biology.

- “What You Don’t Know About Fire Can Hurt Us All”
- Knowledge about fire as a natural process spawned an academic discipline known as “fire ecology.” Despite what we now know, we continue to build and maintain burnable houses in fire-driven ecosystems. Such oblivion needs to stop, but it will only stop through a culture change.

- “Restoring a Place to New Glory”
- Crow Valley Recreation Area exemplifies both cultural and ecological change over time. Its national reputation as an important stopover place for migratory birds attracts uncounted bird enthusiasts. A consortium of wildlife groups could bring new resources and dedication into better long-term management of the area.
