On Thursday February 27th @ 11:30am library leadership made the difficult decision to close off the technology areas on the second floor after the discovery of bed bugs in the computer lab.
We immediately began working with City’s Facilities management team and a professional pest control company to thoroughly clean and treat not only the affected areas but the entire building as a precaution. The affected area is currently limited to a small space on the second floor in our computer lab.
After consulting with professionals and continuing treatment it has been determined that the space will reopen on Monday March 2nd. We feel that beginning Monday there is no longer a risk of exposure to patrons and staff and that it will be safe to do so. That being said staff will continue to monitor the situation closely.
In the meantime, we are expanding access to public computers on the first floor of the building. We recognize that access to technology is one of the core services we offer to the public.
Libraries across the country, in addition to other public spaces, occasionally have issues with bedbugs. At this time, there have been no sign of the bugs in any of our materials or in any of the areas on the first floor of the library. We will continue to work closely with the City’s Facilities Management staff and experts in the field of pest control to treat the area and will reopen the second floor to the public as soon as possible.
We strive to provide a clean, well-maintained and welcoming space for our community members. We will provide updates about the situation when have additional information through our website, social media and with signs in the library.
